When the former tenant Better; for Living decided to switch to online retailing and move their art production base to Oakland, Philhour saw the opportunity to make her longtime dream of owning her own shop in this neighborhood come true.

The front of the house is stocked with the toys, apparel, and pet supplies. Meanwhile, the back room serves as a showroom for ceramic mugs, plates, and vases, which are all produced by Wright’s company, BlueStone Pottery. Wright is already an accomplished ceramicist whose resume includes working at Heath Ceramics and creating a whole collection for Bodega restaurant in North Beach. In a time when choosing to shop with small businesses can be tough on the bank, Village Place has answered the call for affordable and locally made gifts.
